New Alpaca handspun!

28 02 2007

alpacaI’ve been spinning lately.  All I want to do is Spin. SPIN SPIN SPIN.  LOVE spinning.

Most of my spinning time has gone to some sock weight/lace weight that I’m spinning from the Cherry Tree Hill roving I bought awhile back.

I just finished the 2 out of 3 oz of this alpaca roving that I picked up last summer at the Great Lakes Fiber Fest.  The roving is from Moonlight Alpacas.  So far I’ve got 100yds of this alpaca.  It’s navajo plied.  Not quite sure when I’ll get the the last ounce. I really need to use the stuff I’ve got. I might have to just not go to these fiber fests this summer. The roving stash is BAD. The yarn stash is just as bad though, actually it might be worse than the roving stash.

I’ve been neglecting my blog lately.  I need to work on that a little, especially since I signed up for some secret swaps and stuff lately.  Need to give them all something to read. hehe.

January Socktopia socks.

24 02 2007

jan socktopia socksPattern:  My own… came out of this little brain of mine.

Yarn:  Knitpicks Memories in Morning Glory.

I made little snowflakes… added some beads.  We’ll call them socks.

Nothing worth showing.

socksEver since they didn’t get finished for January I just neglected them.  I’ve gotten off my butt though and I’m determined to finish them before the end of February.

Speaking of socks, I joined sock madness.  It looks like fun, but signups are closed now.  The supply list was posted today so I went through what I already had and what I still needed.  So I ordered the sock yarn I needed for 3 of the pairs of socks.

stashLast moday after buying lots of fiber I decided I didn’t want my lavender moth balls anymore.  They don’t smell too great.  I ordered some REAL lavender.  I hope by just taking the lid off my yarn bins I’ll get that icky moth ball smell out.  😀

Picture of stash airing!  YAY!

Now I’m off to stress about projects!  I had a nice long weekend.  Had today and yesterday off.  I planned on getting lots done this weekend, but had a funeral for my grandpa instead.  Not fun.  I’ve been in one of those “I don’t want to do anything” moods since mid last week, when we knew he was going fast.

Apparently I deal with stress by buying yarn and tea…all I’ve done this weekend was add items to my wish list.  It’s starting to grow out of control.

SP Handspun

13 02 2007

wool/angora handspunThe roving that Valerie sent me for SP8 has been finished and washed.  I’ve got 337 yards.  For those of you who forgot (and me who won’t remember if I don’t put it here now), it’s a 66% wool/ 34% angora blend.  It’s amazingly soft.  I’m in love with it.

I need to get knitting with the handspun yarn.  I’m practically swimming in handspun and acrylic.  I have thought about selling some handspun too.  Mostly as a way to buy more roving, and I’ll never use ALL of it.  I just have so much of the same colors.

Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival

11 02 2007

I went for a spindle and fiber, I came back with only fiber.  Grafton Fibers wasn’t there so no spindle for me.  However, I did speak with the owner of Seaport Yarn and she said she’d get the spindle that I was looking for and send it my ways.  She’s a Grafton vendor.  😀 I’m pumped.

DSC01395So I got some GREAT deals on roving.  Kitty cat is included for scale.  Keep in mind he is a BIG kat, about 15lbs and not considered over weight.  Being big is in his nature apparently.

First off, the Cherry Tree Hill.  I love this stuff.  Oh the colors.  You pay for the colors in the price though.  I’ve never seen this for much less than $25 for 8 oz.  It’s soooo worth it though.

DSC01394Next up is a Jelly Roll wool batt that I got from Decadent Fibers. Again with the gorgeousness.  1lb.  It has dark blue and a lighter blue and it’s swirled around.  My boyfriend picked it out because he liked the colors, so I think he’ll get a hat from this.  In fact he picked out a lot of the colors I ended up with.  It’s kinda like when I went to Great Lakes fiber fest and my mom gave me her opinion on colors so I bought what she liked… this time I bought what my BF liked.  lol.  Although the Cherry Tree Hill something I wanted.
DSC01389Next up.  3lbs of Lincoln wool roving.  Only $12 a pound.  I had to get it.  The orange one has some mohair in it as well.  It was purchased from the nicest lady who has a farm with 70+ sheep.  She was also selling some angora rabbits which were so cute.

I think I scare my cat just a bit. He looked terrified by the end of my photo shoot. hehe.DSC01391

Peekaboo Mittens

7 02 2007

peekaboo mittensFinished the Peekaboo mittens today, I’m going to wear them tomorrow so my hands don’t freeze.

Pattern: Peekaboo Mittens from February ’07 Magknits

Yarn: Red Heart that’s been hanging out in the stash for a year now.

Modifications: Tons were made.  I had perfect gauge and followed the pattern exactly.  Truth was it was big, so either my hands are freakishly small or I just like tight fitting mittens so here were the changes I made.  Cuff: CO 34.  Then I did an extra 4 rows of stockinette before I started the thumb gusset.  Thumb gusset: I did a K15 instead of the K18(22) in the pattern. And when instructed to repeat the previous 2 rounds… I only repeated once which gave me 7 stitches for the thumb.  Base of hand: I placed the first marker 19 stitches into the round and did the rest according to the pattern.  Finger opening: I didn’t repeat the ribbing 3 more times, I only did 2 because I liked it better that way.  Mitten top:  I repeated the decrease rounds 4 times more instead of the 5(6), and ended up with 14 stitches that I grafted together.  Thumb:  I picked up 6 stitches and followed the pattern through.  For the left mitten I did the thumb gusset with the initial K15 (just like the right).  Then for the base of the hand I did a K3 before the first pm and followed the rest of the pattern through.

It’s a great pattern.  I’ll definitely make some more in the future.

SP10 bandwagon

7 02 2007

I just had to do it this time around.  It was a blast the first time and since I told myself I would limit yarn purchases to $20 a month, it works with SP10 because I just take that $20 and spend it on someone else.  😀

1. What is/are your favorite yarn/s to knit with? What fibers do you absolutely *not* like?
I love natural fibers and sock yarns.  Sock yarn is my friend.  😀  I’d prefer no acrylic yarn (because I’m practically swimming in the stuff already).

Circulars are stored in the containers they came in.  My sock DPNS are in a little tubey thing I got for SP8, and everything else is in those generic needle holders.

3 years knitting, completely self taught.  I condsider myself intermediate to advanced.

I have one on Kaboodle, and I like to add yarn and roving when I get bored.  😀

College student, living with parents.  I have a boyfriend, two cats, fish…
